A Brief History of Vanderbijlpark

Vanderbijlpark is one of South Africa's youngest cities, yet it has played a significant role in the country's industrial development. Named after renowned electrical engineer and industrialist Dr Hendrik Johannes van der Bijl, the city was established in 1947 as part of a visionary plan to create a modern industrial centre on the banks of the Vaal River.Dr Van der Bijl believed that South Africa should produce its own steel to support economic growth and industrial expansion. His vision led to the establishment of the Iron and Steel Corporation (ISCOR), which became the heart of Vanderbijlpark and one of the country's largest steel producers. The city's layout was carefully planned, with residential suburbs, parks, schools, and commercial areas designed to provide an excellent quality of life for its residents.Over the decades, Vanderbijlpark has grown into a vibrant city that balances industry with leisure. While its steelworks remain an important part of the local economy, the city has also become known for its beautiful riverfront, outdoor recreation, shopping, educational institutions, and tourism.
